What is Gallbladder Surgery?
The gallbladder is a small pouch under the liver that stores bile. Gallstones can form inside it and cause pain, infection or jaundice. Removing the gallbladder (cholecystectomy) is the standard treatment for gallstones that cause symptoms.
People live a normal life without a gallbladder — bile then flows directly from the liver into the intestine.
Common signs and symptoms
- Pain in the upper right or middle of the abdomen, often after oily food
- Pain that spreads to the back or right shoulder
- Nausea, vomiting or bloating
- Fever, or yellowing of the eyes or skin (jaundice) — see a doctor promptly
Having one of these does not always mean you have this condition. Only a doctor can tell after an examination.
How it is treated
Diagnosis is usually made with an ultrasound and blood tests. Most patients have a laparoscopic cholecystectomy under general anaesthesia. If there are complications, such as stones in the bile duct, further tests or procedures may be needed.
Recovery
Many patients go home within a day or two, and light routine work is often possible within about a week. Eat light, low-fat meals at first, as advised by the doctor.
Cost
The cost depends on your condition, the type of procedure, the tests needed and the length of any hospital stay. It can only be estimated after the doctor has examined you. Please contact the clinic for details.
