What is Fracture Management?
A fracture is a break in a bone, usually after a fall, an accident or another injury. Some fractures are small cracks; others are complete breaks that may move out of place.
Correct early care — keeping the limb still, relieving pain and getting an X-ray — helps the bone heal in the right position.
Common signs and symptoms
- Pain and swelling after an injury
- Being unable to move the limb or put weight on it
- A visible deformity or abnormal movement
- Bruising, numbness or tingling
- Bone visible through the skin — this is an emergency
Having one of these does not always mean you have this condition. Only a doctor can tell after an examination.
How it is treated
The doctor examines the injury and arranges an X-ray. Treatment may include a splint, plaster cast or sling, pain relief and advice. Fractures that need an operation or specialised care are referred to an orthopaedic surgeon.
Recovery
Bones usually take several weeks to heal, depending on the bone, the type of fracture and your age and health. Follow-up X-rays, and exercises or physiotherapy, may be needed to regain movement and strength.
Cost
The cost depends on your condition, the type of procedure, the tests needed and the length of any hospital stay. It can only be estimated after the doctor has examined you. Please contact the clinic for details.
