What is General Surgery?

General surgery covers the diagnosis and surgical treatment of many common problems, including conditions of the abdomen, breast, skin and soft tissues — for example lumps, cysts, abscesses and lipomas.
Not every problem needs an operation. The surgeon first examines you and explains all the suitable options.

Common signs and symptoms

  • A new lump or swelling anywhere on the body
  • A painful boil or abscess
  • Abdominal pain that does not go away
  • A wound or ulcer that is not healing

Having one of these does not always mean you have this condition. Only a doctor can tell after an examination.

How it is treated

After an examination and any tests needed, the surgeon explains the diagnosis and the options, which may include medicines, a minor procedure under local anaesthesia, or surgery. Tissue that is removed may be sent for testing (biopsy) when needed.

Recovery

After many minor procedures you can go home the same day. Recovery time depends on the procedure. You will be given instructions on wound care, medicines and follow-up.

Cost

The cost depends on your condition, the type of procedure, the tests needed and the length of any hospital stay. It can only be estimated after the doctor has examined you. Please contact the clinic for details.

Frequently asked questions

Most lumps are harmless, but some need tests. Any new, growing or painful lump should be checked by a doctor.

Many minor procedures are done under local anaesthesia, which numbs only the area being treated. The doctor will explain the type of anaesthesia for your procedure.

Usually, yes. Blood tests and other checks help make surgery and anaesthesia safe. The clinic will tell you which tests you need.
