Gallstones: Symptoms, Causes & Treatment Options
What Are Gallstones?
Gallstones are hardened deposits of digestive fluid (bile) that form in the gallbladder. They can range from tiny grains to golf-ball sized stones.
Common Symptoms
- Sudden, intense pain in the upper right abdomen
- Pain that radiates to the right shoulder or back
- Nausea and vomiting after fatty meals
- Bloating and indigestion
- Fever and chills (if infection develops)
Risk Factors
Gallstones are more common in women, people over 40, those with a family history, and individuals who are overweight. A diet high in fat and low in fibre also increases risk.
Treatment
The standard treatment for symptomatic gallstones is laparoscopic cholecystectomy — removal of the gallbladder through small incisions. This is a safe, routine procedure with same-day or next-day discharge.
Remember: Delaying treatment can lead to complications like acute cholecystitis, pancreatitis, or bile duct obstruction. If you experience severe abdominal pain, seek medical help immediately.
